PE

    The aim of the Physical Education Department is to provide you with a fun, diverse and engaging curriculum whereby you are provided with opportunities to try a range of sports and activities. We aim to create a learning environment where all students have an equal opportunity to develop their physical and mental ability, preparing them for a healthy active lifestyle throughout their lives. The curriculum is combined with an extracurricular programme where students may extend their learning before school, during lunch and after school. This also includes opportunities to compete in the Basingstoke and Deane leagues across a range of sports.

    EXPECTATIONS

    Students are expected to follow the college golden rules in all PE lessons including being prepared for PE by bringing the correct PE kit which includes:

    Essential Kit:

    • Sky PE polo shirt with logo
    • Navy shorts
    • White socks for indoor lessons
    • Light blue socks for football/rugby
    • Trainers
    • One-piece swimming costume or swimming trunks/shorts in black or blue.
    • Cranbourne rugby shirt with logo
    • Towel

     

    Advisable:

    • Cranbourne navy tracksuit for outdoor activities
    • Shin guards for football/hockey
    • Football boots
    • Swimming goggles and gum shield

    Every student at Cranbourne is expected to take part in Physical Education lessons. If they have some form of illness or injury PE staff should be notified through a letter from the parent or guardian of the child. The letter must be given to the teacher prior to the lesson. Students should still wear their PE kit as they are a part of the lesson and can help with equipment, coaching, timing, recording and officiating.

     

     

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT KEY STAGE 3

    Students take part in at least 4 lessons of PE each fortnight. Our curriculum covers the national curriculum enabling students to use a range of tactics and strategies, develop techniques, overcome intellectual and physical challenges and analyse personal performances over a range of sports and activities. Lessons are taught in both single sex and mixed teaching groups.

    Physical Education Activities:

    • Baseline Assessment (First 3 weeks of year 7)
    • Outwitting Opponents: Football, Rugby, Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Lacrosse, Handball, Water Polo, Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Rounders, Softball, Baseball, Stoolball, Ultimate Frisbee, Table Tennis, Cricket
    • Accurate Replication Activities: Gymnastics, Trampolining, Dance
    • Maximum Performance: Athletics
    • Exercising Safely: Health Related Exercise, Swimming, Cycling
    • Problem Solving: Orienteering, Capture the Flag, Team Building Assessment

    To determine what level each students attained at the end of Key Stage 2 in PE, a baseline assessment will take place within the first 3 weeks of college in Year 7.  Students will be awarded a level in a variety of activities including Games, Swimming and Fitness.  These levels will be combined giving an overall level for each student.  This will allow teachers to differentiate tasks and outcomes, specifically for individuals, raising attainment and achievement.

    All assessment will be made using Key Performance Indicators in each sport. Students will be given a level for each sport they study.  They will also be given an overall level which will be a combination of all their sports and activities, and this will be written in their planner.

     

    PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT KEY STAGE 4

    Students take part in 3 lessons of PE each fortnight; lessons are taught in both single sex and mixed teaching groups.. Our curriculum covers the national curriculum and within KS4 we offer students pathways so that they are able to tailor their curriculum to those sports and activities that they enjoy or to experience new sports not experienced in KS3, activities within pathways are taught on a 2/3 week rotation.

     

    Pathways on offer to the students:

    • Performance – To cater for those students who are more competitive. Activities include: Handball, Football, Water Polo, Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Athletics, Hockey and Lacrosse
    • Leisure and Recreation – To cater for those students who enjoy sport on a more social and leisurely basis. Activities include: Badminton, Table Tennis, Hockey, Softball, Ultimate Frisbee and Handball
    • Fitness – To cater for those students who are looking to improve their overall fitness. Activities include: Fitness testing, Navy Seal Training, Circuit training, Continuous training, Weight training, HIIT training, Strength & Conditioning and Boxercise
    • Aesthetic Appreciation – To cater for those students who are more artistic and creative. Activities include: Gymnastics, Trampolining, Dance, Zumba and Rhythmic Gymnastics
    • Problem Solving – To cater for those students who enjoy alternative sporting activities that require thinking and overcoming challenges. Activities include: Orienteering, Capture the Flag, Personal Survival and Team Building

    BTEC FIRST AWARD IN SPORT

    What is it?

    It is a national qualification that provides a vocational education for the sport and leisure industry. It is equivalent to 1 GCSE. The two year programme will lead to an award of an Edexcel BTEC First Award in Sport. This award is an ideal foundation for a Level 3 BTEC in Sport. The course is designed to equip students with the basic knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in current and future employment in the sport and recreation industries.

    How will I be assessed?
    The BTEC First Award in Sport is assessed through an external exam linked to 1 unit and the completion of set coursework assignments linked to 3 individual units. Some of these are moderated (checked and remarked within college) and are then seen by an external moderator appointed by BTEC to check the standards of the work on the course.

    Course Structure
    The BTEC First Award in Sport comprises 4 individual units.
     

    • Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise – Externally Assessed
    • Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance
    • Unit 4: The Sports Performer in Action
    • Unit 5: Training for Personal Fitness
